Bison Battalion cadets participated in the Adopt-a-School program at Kelly Elementary School in Lewisburg last week, joining volunteers from various organizations in activities that improve students' learning and overall experience. Additionally, the program provides cadets with an opportunity for community-service points that help determine their area of Army expertise following graduation. Cadets read to students in the school library, assisted with the school book fair, took part in gym and recess activities with the students, and helped out with the school’s recycling program. The recycling program was of special interest to battalion members (including students from Penn College and four other institutions), as they made posters prior to the event to show students the importance of recycling. More importantly for the cadets, the recycling program takes place during lunch, offering them a period of unstructured time to get to know the students.Due to the federal government shutdown, Bison Battalion scaled back the program by one day; overall, however, students and cadets alike were able to enjoy the experience.
