Students, Faculty Member Combine to Boost Scholarship Fund
Thursday, November 15, 2012
Matching donations from a Pennsylvania College of Technology student organization and its faculty mentor have brought a scholarship fund $1,000 closer to becoming a sustained source of financial aid.
Students in Free Enterprise and adviser Dennis R. Williams, an associate professor of business administration/management at Penn College, each contributed $500 to the Small Business/Entrepreneurship Scholarship Fund.
The fund, begun three years ago with seed money from the Principles of Management course in the School of Business and Computer Technologies, has grown to $7,000 through continuing contributions from the management class and SIFE.
The fund will be fully endowed when it reaches $25,000, perpetually generating scholarship support for students at the college.
“We’re extremely grateful for the continued support of this scholarship by both the Students in Free Enterprise organization and Dennis,” said Robb Dietrich, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. “Their generosity not only will help future students, but also sets a fine example for current students and alumni on the importance of giving back.”
Williams said SIFE held several hot dog sales and used part of its winnings from national-level competitions to make the latest donation.
Participating students are:
Shane M. Beckman, Linden, accounting; Cody A. Bowersox, Middleburg, business administration: human resource management concentration; Cory L. Buckles, South Williamsport, business administration: small business and entrepreneurship concentration; Jessie D. Gagnon, Milton, information technology: technical support technology emphasis; Valerie L. Komarnicki, Williamsport, and Dennette D. Roan, Bellefonte, business administration: marketing concentration; Elizabeth P. Osborn, Lake Ariel, and Jason A. Quartman, Williamsport, business administration: management concentration; Renee E. Smith, Williamsport, industrial and human factors design; and Shasta L. Stine, Williamsport, business management.
The fund made its first scholarship award during the 2011-12 academic year. Preference is given to full-time students who have completed at least 30 credits toward their bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or better, have declared a small-business minor and have taken Small Business Management or an equivalent course.
