Penn College Accounting Student Awarded Three Scholarships
Wednesday, June 13, 2012
A senior in Pennsylvania College of Technology's four-year accounting major has been awarded three scholarships totaling $4,000 from organizations representing his chosen career field.
Steven W. Garner
Steven W. Garner, of Williamsport, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, an association of more than 20,000 certified public accountants working to improve the profession and better serve the public interest. The scholarships are presented on a competitive basis to candidates who “best satisfy the requirements of high intellectual capacity, leadership potential, financial need and intent to pursue a career in accounting,” according to the association.
Garner, a graduate of Central Mountain High School in Clinton County, also received one of seven scholarships from the Teachers of Accounting at Two Year Colleges. That $1,000 award is based on completion of college credit hours, GPA, recommendations and a commitment to a career in accounting. Garner was sponsored by John D. Grigsby, assistant professor of business administration/accounting in the college's School of Business and Computer Technologies.
A $1,000 Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Garner by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Foundation, which works to encourage students to pursue careers in fraud examination and provide resources for research on the detection and deterrence of fraud.
The scholarship is named for two members of the ACFE – Larry Jennings and Tracy Ritchie – who were among five employees of the Houston-based Union Texas Petroleum Holdings Inc. fatally wounded when terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan, fired upon their vehicle on Nov. 14, 1997.
