Two Penn College Students Receive Power-Generation Scholarships
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Two Pennsylvania College of Technology students each have been awarded $2,500 scholarships from the Electrical Generating Systems Association.
Among the dozen David I. Coren Memorial Scholarship winners for the 2011-12 year are Nathan W. Johnson, of Annville; and Rory K. Kania, of Hanover Township, Luzerne County.
Johnson, who plans to graduate in 2013 with degrees in diesel technology and on-site power generation, is a locomotive technician apprentice for the Lycoming Valley Railroad. Kania, who already earned degrees in heavy construction equipment technology (2000) and its Caterpillar emphasis (2010) is enrolled in the on-site power generation major and interns at the Lycoming County Landfill.
"ESGA is an organization that strives to give back to its members and to promote the industry," said Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management. "Trade shows, training opportunities, membership discounts and scholarships like the two Nathan and Rory are recipients of illustrate the commitment EGSA shows toward "˜growing' the profession."
Penn College's two-year on-site power generation major is offered cooperatively through the School of Natural Resources Management at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood and the School of Construction and Design Technologies on the college's main campus in Williamsport. It offers students the opportunity to develop skills needed to install, maintain, diagnose and service on-site power-generation units.
The David I. Coren Scholarship Program was established to provide merit-based financial assistance to full-time students who plan to seek employment in the power-generation industry upon graduation. The program memorializes a former executive at Zenith Controls and a leader within EGSA, who died in 2000.
With the addition of this year's recipients, Penn College students have been awarded 15 scholarships since the program began during the 2003-04 academic year.
