Horticulture Instructor Achieves 'Landscape Industry Certified' Status

A faculty member in Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Natural Resources Management has been designated a Landscape Industry Certified Horticultural Technician by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET).

Carl J. Bower Jr., a horticulture instructor at the college's Schneebeli Earth Science Center, attained international certification on the basis of a recent examination covering a variety of topics including plant physiology, insect and disease identification, and pesticide safety. Among the benefits are increased respect and recognition in the profession, a heightened credibility with clients and prospects, and a sense of personal achievement.

Bower is a 1993 landscape/nursery technology graduate of Penn College and also holds the Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturist designation from the Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association. He joined the college as an adjunct faculty member in 2001 and, in 2006, became a full-time instructor in the School of Natural Resources Management.

Penn College's two-year landscape/horticulture technology major is accredited by PLANET, which comprises more than 3,500 member companies and affiliates. Those businesses' employees from lawn-care professionals to golf-course superintendents amount to more than 100,000 green industry jobs.
