Penn College Adds 1,000-Point Career Hoops Scorer, but Teams Go Winless

Vol. 8, No. 26 (Through Sunday, Feb. 7)

Greg Solyak of Lancaster became the fifth player in Pennsylvania College of Technology men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points, but the Wildcat men and women took it on the chin during the week. The teams went a combined 0-6, both falling a half-game behind Penn State Wilkes-Barre for first place in the Penn State University Athletic Conference North Division standings.

Flashback Men's Basketball
On Monday, Solyak scored a team-high 24 points as the team dropped a 71-69 decision at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

Thursday night at Penn State Greater Allegheny, Solyak scored 25 points to surpass the 1,000-point career scoring mark he now has 1,006 and Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) added 20 points in a 95-77 loss. That ended the week, as Saturday's scheduled home game was postponed due to snow.

Senior Joe Simon (Renovo), with 1,289 points, is the men's all-time leading scorer; Craig Flint, who graduated a year ago, is second with 1,196; Tony Flint, Craig's older brother who played from 2002-05 is third with 1,043, and Bobby String, who played from 1998-2000, is fourth with 1,022.

In the Week 9 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Coaches' Poll, the Wildcats are tied at No. 10 with Vermont Tech.

Women's Basketball
Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) scored 18 points and Jess Hohman (South Williamsport) added 17 as the Wildcats opened the week Monday with a 67-62 loss at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

On Tuesday, Steer tallied 17 points and Hohman 14 in an 83-50 loss to NCAA Division III Elmira, N.Y., College.

At home Wednesday with Pitt-Titusville, Hohman scored 15 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in a 49-38 loss.

At Penn State Greater Allegheny on Thursday, the Wildcats lost 60-49. Lindsay Wiegand (Watsontown) scored 18 points. Saturday's home game with Penn State Beaver was postponed due to snow.

In the most recent USCAA Coaches' Poll, the team cracked the top 25 for the first time this season and is ranked No. 23 nationally.

Archery
Thanks to Friday's snowstorm and the fact that no other college teams wanted to travel, the Wildcats had only themselves to shoot against Saturday at the PA State Indoor Championships in Taylor. Dan Wido (Shickshinny) won the men's compound with 587 points, Glen Thomas (Mercer) took the men's recurve with 585 points, Lindsey Fackler (Halifax) captured the women's compound with 581 points and Hilary Fisher (Laureldale) won the women's recurve with 353 points.

Men's Volleyball
Wins over club teams from Bucknell and Lock Haven universities on Thursday and Bloomsburg University on Saturday boosted the Wildcats to 5-0. "I haven't felt threatened by anyone. "¦ They're playing really well," coach Wes Strayer said. Sunday's scheduled home match with Messiah and Villanova was postponed.

On the Horizon Women's Basketball
On Thursday, the squad faces its last NCAA Division III opponent of the season when it travels to Marywood University.

Bowling
On Wednesday, the college's coed team competes in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championships at Summit Lanes in Mountain Top hosted by Northampton Community College in its final tune-up for the season-ending Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championships later in the month.
