Sunday, November 8, 2009

A men's-team second and women's-team fifth marked a great weekend for Pennsylvania College of Technology cross-country teams in United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships in Concord, N.H.

In USCAA National Soccer Championships at Randolph Center, Vt., the second-seeded Wildcat women advanced to Saturday's semifinals where they lost in a defensive struggle against No. 3 seed Marygrove (Mich.) College, 1-0, to end tied for third, and the fourth-seeded Penn College men topped No. 8 Vermont Technical College in the consolations, 4-1, to finish tied for fourth.

In soccer action Friday, the Penn College women scored a 3-2 overtime win over Vermont Technical College, while the men suffered a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Spalding University.

Flashback
Cross-Country
The Penn College men scored 79 points and finished second to Dine (N.M.) College, which had 23 points, in Friday's meet. A year ago, Penn College was third in the national championships. Individually for the Penn College men, Mark Cordeiro was fifth among 94 runners over the 8-kilometer course in 28 minutes, 5 seconds, and earned All-American honors for his top-seven finish. Also for theWildcat men, Jeff Faherty (Sussex, N.J.) was 11th, Corvin Oberholtzer (Wellsboro) 17th, Brad Robinson (West Chester) 18th, Travis Cain (Bloomsburg) 30th, Brandon Knapp (Shenandoah) 33rd and Robert Forbes (Warren) 43rd. For the season, Penn College finished 51-14 overall.

"It was an exciting time. The kids worked their butts off for that," said coach Mike Paulhamus of the team's finish.

"Two guys Cain and Knapp ran their best races of the season, which helped us out. And Cordeiro moved from sixth to fifth late in the race and that helped us because we only finished in second place by two points. It was big move on his part," Paulhamus added.

For the Penn College women, Tamara Pavlov (Lewisburg) finished 11th among 77 runners in 25:34 over a 6K course. Also for the Wildcats, Abigail Schuler (Waynesboro) finished 16th, Hollie Schuster (Jersey Shore) 20th, Abigail Park (Cochranville) 54th and Alyssa Giedroc (Howard) 63rd. Penn College finished 21-13-1 overall.

"I think fifth place was really good for these girls," said Paulhamus, in his 10th season as coach. "They all ran their personal bests. Everybody was juiced for the race. All you could ask is that they run their best and what happens, happens."

Women's Soccer
April Champion (Jersey Shore) scored on a header in the 98th minute to lift the second-seeded Wildcats past Vermont Technical College. Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) assisted on the goal. Scoring earlier in the match for Penn College were Alexis Brown (Riverside), on an assist from Katie Moltz (Pottstown), and Julie Yeager (Hamburg), on an assist from Champion. Penn College took 16 shots during the match and Vermont four.

Also on Friday, it was announced that Steer and Moltz had been named USCAA All-Americans and Champion an Honorable Mention All-American. Champion and Samantha Wallish (Hummelstown) also were named Academic All-Americans. Steer, a freshman striker, was first in goals and total points, and Moltz, a senior center-midfielder, third in goals and second in total points. Champion is a sophomore outside defender and a two-year starter.

In Saturday's semifinal, the Wildcats gave up what turned out to be the only goal in the match just 31 seconds into the contest. Penn College managed just four shots on goal against Marygrove College; Marygrove managed only seven shots of its own.

Men's Soccer
Coleby Frye (York) scored both of the Wildcats' goals during regulation Friday against Spalding (Ky.) University, but they fell in the opening round in double overtime on penalty kicks.

Penn College seniors Steven Bullock (Manheim) and Frye were named USCAA All-America Honorable Mentions for their outstanding seasons, while Wildcats Brendan Muth (Macungie), Chris Rougeot (Torrington, Conn.), Clayton Bretz (New Bloomfield) and William DeAngelo (Dallas) were named USCAA Academic All-Americans.
