Thursday, July 9, 2009
Two one-point losses eliminated Pennsylvania College of Technology archers Zachary Plannick, of Coraopolis, and Glen Thomas, of Mercer, during their first matches in individual competition Thursday at the 25th World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.
Plannick, a junior who qualified 19th in a field of 44 in the men's compound event, drew a bye in the round of 32 and then fell to No. 14 Gusti Nyoman Puruhito, of Indonesia, 112-111, in the round of 16.
Thomas, a sophomore who qualified 38th in a field of 70 in men's recurve, was edged by No. 27 Elias Cobo Cuesta, of Spain, 99-98, in the round of 32.
Although finished in individual action, both maintain medal hopes in team competition that begins Friday.
Plannick, Steven Gatto and Stephen Schwade will represent the United States in men's compound team against Serbia. The Americans qualified fifth Wednesday with 2,024 points, while Serbia was last in the 12-team field with 1,861.
In men's recurve, the American squad of Thomas, Tim Meyers and Jacob Wukie will square off against Mexico. The Americans qualified eighth in a 17-team field on Wednesday with 1,755 points, while Mexico was ninth with 1,753.
Originally, the University Games Web site listed both Plannick and Thomas as competitors in mixed team competition, but that error was later corrected as neither is involved in mixed action.
Archery competition concludes Saturday. The University Games end Sunday.
