Shorthanded, Golf Team Nonetheless Extends Streak

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

At the beginning of the year, coach Chet Schuman said he had a very talented group of golfers and that was evident Monday when they played at Penn National, the home course for Penn State Mont Alto. "We were a player short and had an alternate team roster and played with a great deal of character and pride to preserve our winning streak," the coach said. The team tied Penn State New Kensington with a score of 325 and extended its record to 155-0 by beating Mont Alto, which shot a 346. "If you ask the players, none of them was happy with his play, but the fact that we were able to play shorthanded and still tie is a real testimony to this group of young men," Schuman said. "It is also a wakeup call that we cannot sit on our laurels, but must play very well to continue to win." The medalist for the tournament was John Hook from New Kensington, who shot a 73. He was followed by two Penn College golfers: senior Doug Wagner, of Huntington Mills, with a 78; and Eric Schall, of Jersey Shore, at 79. Freshman Kyle Shoultes, of Sellersville, shot 82; freshman Ben Turner, of Muncy, 86; and Dean Bell, of Schwenksville, 89. The team will close out its regular season next Tuesday when at Links at Church Springs, the home course of Penn State New Kensington, before Conference Championships on Oct. 5-7.
