A 34-year carpentry instructor at Pennsylvania College of Technology, who continues to teach on a part-time basis despite his August 2002 retirement, has established a scholarship for students in the College's School of Construction and Design Technologies.
The Carl M. Hillyard Scholarship Fund will be awarded annually, with preference given to full-time students in the following majors: Construction Carpentry, Building Construction Technology, Building Construction Technology-Masonry Emphasis, Cabinetmaking and Millwork, or Residential Construction Technology and Management.
The Avis resident has taught carpentry to thousands of students at Penn College (and its immediate predecessor, Williamsport Area Community College) since joining the faculty in September 1968.
"I've been blessed to have worked at the best technical school, bar none," Hillyard said. "The Building Construction program is excellent, with plenty of hands-on experience. It's a privilege for me to be able to continue helping students through this scholarship fund, to help them reach their dreams."
College employees, former students and friends are welcome to contribute to the fund, both to honor Hillyard and to assist his efforts to help students succeed. Gifts to the Carl M. Hillyard Scholarship Fund can be mailed to the Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation Inc., One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA 17701-5799. Gifts also can be made via credit card online.
