Penn College softball team has 4-0 week

Sunday, April 2, 2023

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s women’s softball team had a perfect week, while the men’s lacrosse team split in two matches, the baseball team largely was the victim of less-than-ideal weather with four games postponed and the golf team's season got underway.

FLASHBACK
Softball

Penn College swept a home nonconference doubleheader against first-time foe Penn State Altoona, 8-4 and 6-2, on Wednesday to improve to 8-4.

In the first game, MacKenzie Weaver, of Montoursville, and Jordan Specht, of Frederick, Maryland, each had three hits and drove in two runs, and Hailey DeBrody, of Cogan Station, also plated two runs to help Weaver – also the starting pitcher – improve to 4-2.

In the nightcap, Weaver and Specht each had two hits, with Specht plating two runs, and DeBrody had a two-run homer and RBI single to help starting pitcher Kyla Benner, of Bethlehem, go to 3-1.

The Wildcats concluded their week with a home twin bill shutout sweep of winless Wells College in their United East openers by scores of 11-0 and 17-0, both in five innings, to improve to 10-4 with their seventh straight win.

On the mound in the opener, Benner tossed a one-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none while improving to 4-1, and was backed offensively as DeBrody knocked in two first-inning runs with a double, Skylar Splain, of Liverpool, plated two more in the third with a single and Jaylynn Cochran, of Cogan Station, drove in another two in the fourth.

Benner then started the second game, fanning the first two batters to record the 300th strikeout of her four-year career, before giving way to Weaver, who held Wells hitless the rest of the way, striking out eight, and improved to 5-2 in the combined no-hitter. On offense, Cochran and Maddie Hurst, of Mechanicsburg, each had three hits, including doubles, and drove in three runs.

Lifetime since 2017, the Wildcats are 14-0 against Wells.

Golf
Penn College opened its golf season by finishing third in a six-team field over the weekend in the Penn State Division III Challenge, which was shortened to 27 holes by bad weather. Individually for the Wildcats, Peyton Mussina, of Montoursville, and Gavin Baer, of Bainbridge, tied for eighth.

Saturday, on the par 36, 3,374-yard Penn State Blue Course front 9, the Wildcats were fourth with a 165 score that saw high winds and storms pass through. Baer, with a round that included two birdies, led the team with a 2-over-par 38 and was followed by Mussina at 41.

Sunday, on the par 72, 6,328-yard Penn State White Course, Mussina had four birdies and rebounded with a 76 and Baer shot a 79 as both finished with two-day totals of 117.

Wrestling
Freshman Isaac Cory, of Montoursville, was named to the d3wrestling.com all-freshman team.

Cory overcame an early season injury to finish with 18 wins during his rookie campaign, became Penn College's first-ever national qualifier and was the only freshman in the 184-pound NCAA Division III bracket. He finished second at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional and highlighted his season with three wins over national qualifiers, a victory against regional champions, and a win against 2023 All-American.

Also, junior Noah Hunt, of Muncy, and senior Ryan Berstler, of Middletown, were named National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-Americans. This is Hunt's third honor, while Berstler earned his first nod.
