The Penn College community is invited to participate in a 9/11 Day of Service, organized by the Office of Student Engagement and scheduled from noon-4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, on the Bush Campus Center patio.

9/11 Day of Service

Faculty/staff and students are encouraged to join in a day of service, learning and remembrance to honor those lost on 9/11; to show appreciation for first responders; and to celebrate those who rose in service following the national tragedy.

An important part of remembering and honoring the lives and communities impacted by 9/11 is to emphasize unity, healing and service. There will be activities in which to take part, as well as campus and community displays, giveaways and wellness resources.

Service opportunities include:

  • Writing a letter to a military member or first responder for Operation Gratitude.
  • Donating items to The Cupboard. Needed items include cereal, noodles, easy-prep pasta sides, instant mashed potatoes, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, basmati rice, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit, and applesauce.
  • Planting a flag on the Thompson Professional Development Center lawn in honor of one of the 470 emergency responders who died on 9/11.

Additional activities and tables to visit will include:

  • Making a paper crane to promote hope and healing.
  • Writing words of affirmation and support on the Survivor Tree.
  • Planting and taking seeds for yourself or to gift to someone special in your life.
  • Learning about the history of the 9/11 Day of Service and ways you can honor it.
  • Meeting with representatives of campus and community organizations.
