Combating the Skills Gap in Advanced Manufacturing

More than 4 million jobs in advanced manufacturing are expected to open in the next 10 years. Due to retirements and a lack of new workers entering the field, industry experts believe 2 million of these jobs will go unfilled. Penn College was awarded $685,297 from the National Science Foundation: Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program to help lessen this growing talent gap in the advanced manufacturing industry. Please click the links below to learn what Penn College is doing to help bolster America’s workforce!

Aviation Workforce Success Project (AWSP)

Our nation faces critical projected shortages of skilled aviation maintenance professionals. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a faster than average job growth for aircraft technicians of five percent from 2019 to 2029.* The Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC) estimates a need for more than 10,000 mechanics annually to meet national market demand.** Penn College was awarded an Aviation Workforce Development Grant of $214,500 from the FAA to help bolster the numbers of individuals entering these rewarding careers.

A Collaborative Approach to Expanding Nondestructive Testing Education within a Welding Program

This project aims to address the growing unmet need for skilled technicians in nondestructive testing. Nondestructive testing is used to test the safety of structures, vehicles, or vessels using technologies such as ultrasound and X-ray analysis. Nondestructive testing technicians help U.S. vessel, vehicle, pipeline, and infrastructure industries meet quality and safety assurance requirements, thus preventing injury or loss of life. The shortage of workers in nondestructive testing results from both high industry demand and a shortage of training programs.
