Advanced Credit

Newly enrolled students with completed course work from a vocational-technical school are encouraged to contact the Engineering Technologies School Office to have competency assessment forms sent to them to have their instructor complete. If the instructor's assessment indicates that the student has acquired the necessary foundational skills with an outstanding rating, the student may qualify for advanced credit.

Typical MTT courses for which students may receive advanced credit:

  • MTT 128 Mill Applications
  • MTT 129 Lathe Applications

In some cases, the student may be given the opportunity to take a placement exam to determine their eligibility for advanced credit. Entering students are not assessed a fee for taking the placement exams.

Registered Penn College students may request to take CSC124 Information, Technology, and Society by examination provided prerequisites for the course have been met. Complete the request form and follow all guidelines.

Newly enrolled students with completed course work from a technical school or comprehensive high school may choose to take the advanced placement exams to determine their eligibility for advanced credit for the following classes:

  • ELT 111 (Direct Current Fundamentals)
  • ELT114 (Residential Electrical Theory)
  • ELT115 (Residential Electrical Lab)

Entering students are not assessed a fee for taking the placement exams.

Newly enrolled students with completed course work from a technical school or comprehensive high school may choose to take the advanced placement exams to determine their eligibility for advanced credit for the following classes:

  • EET 114 Introduction to Digital Electronics
  • EET 115 Digital Circuits Applications
  • EET 116 Electronic Circuits and Devices I

Entering students are not assessed a fee for taking the placement exams.

Information Technology students requesting to take advantage of the College's credit-by-exam opportunity must contact the School of Engineering Technologies for more information. The courses that typically are challenged for credit-by-exam include:

  • CIT160 Introduction to Programming
  • CIT171 Introduction to Networking
  • CIT180 Introduction to Database
  • CIT240 Introduction to UNIX/Linux
  • EET145 Networking I

Credit for Work/Life Experience

Contact the School of Engineering Technologies for the necessary application. Along with the completed application, you must submit:

  • a letter from your employer which outlines your job description, your daily activities, the number of hours you worked, and a statement indicating to what extent you have mastered the skills/competencies described in the course description (for the course for which you wish to receive credit);
  • portfolio documentation (optional)
  • A $50 non-refundable fee

A faculty committee will review all documentation and render a decision.
