An Emergency Medical Technician course that begins the week of Aug. 19 is accepting registrations. Offered by Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Workforce Development, the course will prepare students who are interested in enrolling in Workforce Development’s paramedic certificate program starting on Jan. 6, 2025.
The Emergency Medical Technician course will be offered at three locations and runs through mid-December. Seating is limited. All course registrations must be completed by Aug. 6. Interested participants may register at the EMT registration site.
The course meets National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards and Instructional Guidelines and is intended to prepare students for National Registry cognitive and psychomotor examinations at the EMT level.
The course comprises 50 hours of lecture and 100 hours of practical learning. Students will select one of three sites: Penn College’s main campus in Williamsport, Penn College at Wellsboro or Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg.
The in-class portion will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays (at Evangelical Hospital) and Tuesdays and Thursdays (in Williamsport and Wellsboro). Some evenings will require instruction from 6 to 10 p.m.
Content will be delivered through a “flipped” mastery-learning model that employs internet-based, streaming-video education. Students will watch videos that support comprehension and reinforce key concepts.
Face-to-face learning includes case studies and skill drills to apply students’ understanding with hands-on activities. Experiential learning during ambulance rotations affords real-world immersion into an environment of practice.
Penn College’s paramedic certificate program provides the diverse skill set necessary to sit for the National Registry of EMT’s paramedic exam.
In the fully immersive certificate program, students start with fundamentals and progress through 1,860 hours of instruction, expanding their knowledge alongside expert instructional staff. Working in state-of-the-art labs, students learn how to stabilize a simulated critical patient inside an ambulance simulator and treat patients in a vehicle rescue. In addition to classroom theory and hands-on learning in labs, students receive field and clinical instruction. Offering direct patient contact, the supervised, real-world experiences are at a variety of sites, such as emergency, surgical, critical care, obstetrics and pre-hospital settings. Certificate students learn everything needed to begin their career in just 12 months.
Pennsylvania EMT certification is required for entrance into the paramedic certificate program. Out-of-state applicants will need to seek reciprocity as soon as possible.
