Four alumni honored at Penn College commencements

Pennsylvania College of Technology presented honors to four alumni during Spring 2024 commencement ceremonies, held May 10-11 at the Community Arts Center in downtown Williamsport.

Kate McCall Stepnick, of Bloomsburg, received the Alumni Humanitarian Award at the college’s Friday, May 10, afternoon ceremony; Daniel T. Hornberger, of Seven Valleys, and Richard C. Hornberger, of Mechanicsburg, were recognized with Distinguished Alumni Awards at the Saturday, May 11, morning commencement; and Corey A. Sarver, of Sykesville, Maryland, accepted the Alumni Mentorship Award at Saturday’s afternoon ceremony.

Alumni Humanitarian Award
Stepnick graduated from Penn College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in applied human services. She later earned a Master of Arts in school counseling-elementary and secondary certification from Eastern University, St. Davids.

She is employed by Nicholas Wolff Foundation Inc./Camp Victory, Millville. In her role there, she collaborates with partner groups to promote enriching experiences for campers with special needs. Stepnick engages the community in the organization’s mission through various forms of outreach, and she works with local organizations to facilitate retreats.

She was previously employed by T.W. Ponessa & Associates Counseling Services, Harrisburg; the Arthritis Foundation, Philadelphia; Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wilmington, Delaware; and the Maternity Care Coalition/Early Head Start, Norristown.

In 2021, Stepnick coordinated an initiative with students in Penn College’s physical therapist assistant major, who put their skills to use by providing video activities for Camp Victory.

She has also returned to campus to speak about her professional experiences with students, participates in the college’s Alumni Tomorrow Makers Program, serves as a member of the Penn College Alumni Board, and has been a Wildcat Alumni Career Mentor.

The Alumni Humanitarian Award is bestowed upon graduates of Penn College who have provided distinguished community or volunteer service and presented themselves as dedicated and loyal alumni.

Distinguished Alumni Awards
Daniel Hornberger received associate degrees from Penn College in health arts, practical nursing emphasis, in 2006, and in nursing in 2008. Richard Hornberger earned an associate degree in networking and technical support in 2002 and a Bachelor of Science in computer information technology: data communications and networking concentration in 2004. They are brothers.

After graduating from Penn College, Daniel Hornberger earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Master of Science in nursing administration from Chamberlain University, Chicago. He is also a graduate of the Academic Executive Leadership Program at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business.

Daniel Hornberger is employed by Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center as operational director of the Heart and Vascular Institute. He was previously employed by WellSpan Health York Hospital as interim director of cardiology, manager of invasive cardiology, nurse coordinator of invasive cardiology and as a registered nurse in the cardiac cath lab and cardiac step down unit.

His professional and community affiliations include the American Heart Association, York, serving as a Heart Ball committee member; Boy Scouts of America, York, an Eagle Scout serving as an assistant scoutmaster; Pennsylvania Organization for Nurse Leaders, Harrisburg, a South Central Chapter member; and as a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

He is also a member of the Alumni Tomorrow Makers Program at Penn College.

After graduating from Penn College, Richard Hornberger went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in technology management, from New York Institute of Technology, Old Westbury; and a Doctor of Business Administration, with a cybersecurity research focus, from the University of Maryland University College, Delphi. He also completed the Executive Development of Global Expertise program from Phoenix Contact.

Richard Hornberger is employed by Phoenix Contact, Middletown, as senior director, Global Cyber Defense Center. Previously at Phoenix Contact, he was director of IT, infrastructure and operational services and Americas Region leader; network and security services manager; network services supervisor; and network engineer.

Earlier, he was employed by the University of Phoenix/The Apollo Group (Worldwide) as a computer networking facilitator and curriculum designer, and by Susquehanna Bancshares Inc., Lititz, as team lead and network engineer III.

He also serves as an adjunct professor in the cybersecurity and information technology programs at Southern New Hampshire University.

His professional and community affiliations include Junior Achievement of Central Pennsylvania, STEM Summit and YES Programs; the National Association of Electronic Manufacturers, Cybersecurity Subcommittee; Harrisburg Area Community College, Computer Networking Technologies Advisory Board; and the United Way Day of Caring, various locations and projects.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to those who have made significant contributions in their chosen fields, demonstrated the importance of their education at Penn College or its predecessors, participated in leadership roles within the community, and demonstrated a commitment to their alma mater.

Alumni Mentorship Award
Sarver graduated from Penn College in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in construction management.

He has worked for Gilbane Building Co. his entire career, where he now serves as senior project executive/market leader as part of the company’s National Center of Excellence for the Sports Market. Previously at Gilbane, he was project executive, senior project manager, project manager, senior project engineer and project engineer.

With 27 years of construction experience, Sarver has successfully delivered a number of complex, state-of-the-art athletic facilities for professional and collegiate sports clientele in Maryland, including upgrades and renovations at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and the Baltimore Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium, among others.

Despite his busy schedule as a construction professional and company executive, Sarver continues to give back to his alma mater. He has frequently worked with faculty to share his industry experience in classrooms and labs, and he is a founding member of the Construction Management Advisory Committee.

Sarver introduced Gilbane to Penn College’s Career Fairs, and he initiated Gilbane’s recruiting of Penn College students for positions with the company. He continues to mentor new hires and is a financial supporter of construction management program events and scholarships at Penn College.

The Alumni Mentorship Award is given in recognition of a business, alumnus or alumna who makes a significant or ongoing contribution to the education or development of Penn College students by providing mentoring opportunities through internships, co-op placements, hiring graduates and professional input.
